IELTS Writing Task 1 Information
- It is advisable to spend not more than 20 minutes on a writing task 1.
- IELTS writing task 1 is only 33% of your total writing marks.
- Your writing marks will be based on
- Task Achievement 25%
- Coherence and cohesion 25%
- Vocabulary 25%
- Grammar 25%
- Academic writing task 1is always on a chart which you will be provided with (bar chart, pie chart, table map, line graph, diagram/process).
- All the words you have written will be counted and all numbers count as one word.
Before you begin your IELTS writing task 1, you should be conscious of the following:
- Read the question and instructions carefully before you begin the task.
- Look at the chart/diagram/graph carefully and process the information.
- Start planning on the structure and details for the task.
- Recall what you know about the structure of writing task 1 (which is given further down this page) and be mindful of the information that has to go into each paragraph.
- Pay attention to spellings, grammar, sentence types, lexical resources, coherence and cohesion, fillers, etc.
Task 1
You will be allotted a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise, illustrate or explain the data in your own words. You may be asked to describe and present data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object, plan or design.
You will also be given instructions to give a summary of the information you see by choosing and documenting the main features you see, you will also make comparisons where relevant.
You will be required to do a data transfer task; the graphic information you are given needs to be illustrated in the form of text.
And to achieve the task successfully, you will need to:
- Write an opening
- Write a synopsis (an overview of what you see)
- Illustrate and emphasize the key elements with figures (data)
- You will need to write a minimum of 150 words and answers must be written in full, with no bullet points or notes.
