Introduction
- Learning is fun,
- You never stop learning because learning is continual.
- I will be talking about a time I learnt a new word as a kid.
What was it
- As a child, I loved learning because.
- My father always said the more you learn the more you know,
- the more you know the more you grow
- And the more you grow the better you become.
- So that statement always made me want to know more.
- My father is the grammarian of the house,
- Every time he always had a word for us.
- Among all his words, one caught my attention as a kid.
- The word was Nincompoop.
When did you learn it?
- I was around 5 or 6 at that time,
- And didn’t know the meaning of the word.
- Until I used it wrongly on my Mum.
How did you learn it?
- I followed my Dad to work during the summer break at that time.
- A lot happened that got my Dad pissed off
- But this time I think he couldn’t hold it in anymore
- So he scolded one of the staff and asked him to stop behaving like a Nincompoop.
- Immediately I heard the word it stuck to me.
- I didn’t know the meaning and I was young and naive.
- When we got home that evening,
- I ran into the kitchen and greeted my mom
- And the next thing that came out of my mouth was,
- “Mom you are a Nincompoop”
- She was so stunned, I don’t think I can forget the expression on her face that day.
What does it mean?
- She asked where I learnt from,
- and I told her it was from my Dad
- She then brought a dictionary out and showed me the meaning
- Then and there I found out it meant “A silly or foolish person”
- Immediately I apologized to her and she forgave me
- But my Dad got scolded for using words like that in front of me.
